The Physicist at the Mall
Published in Paperback by Anhinga Press (1993)
Authors: Janet Holmes and Donna J. Long
Average review score:

WARM INTIMACY --CERTAINLY NOT "JUST" ABOUT SCIENCE
Hopefully the title word "physicist" won't inadvertently steer away readers who consider themselves uncomfortable around science . There is no need. Janet Holmes is one of those people who can place a technical reference here and there in a just a few poems but still make them flow and be very meaningful to any reader based on all the surrounding down-to-earth familiarity...and perhaps even pique some curiosity. The "mall" reference alone should help readers catch on to this aspect. (I wouldn't be giving away too much to mention that just one of the many thoughts of this physicist in the title poem deals with how strapless dresses are engineered.) This prize-winning author was honored by having one poem each in the Best American Poetry of 1994 and of 1995. Several poems in Physicist at the Mall reflect her significant time living in New Mexico through the colorful and rhythmic use of unique regional names. I love the range of her subjects and indications of capacious imagination and creativity in selecting subjects to intertwine bluntly or weave subtly. There is clearly sensuousness and emotion throughout. I was especially touched by a poem in five sections about her father, particularly the tender and humorous description of him at 75 accompanying her down the aisle at her wedding. There is a fine, warm accessibility to her writing which can make you feel you've been there with her chatting a while.

Plan to Retire on Full Pay
Published in Mass Market Paperback by Thomas C. Holmes & Associates, Inc. (01 May, 2000)
Authors: Thomas Holmes and Sharon Green
Average review score:

Great Guide to retirement
I am 62 years old. The information on accumulation was informative, but I am well into the final stages of saving and investing. I am as a result of this book (and recent market conditions) changing my strategy to one of lesser risk using the asset allocation process discussed in the book.

The most informative section was that dealing with how to take my money out of my IRA. I didn't realize all the minefields that I am exposed to.

I loaned my copy of this book to my Financial Consultant so he could become more familiar with the IRA distribution strategies discussed in the book. He was surprised at the information presented. Think I will buy him a copy for him.

I would highly recomend this book to young people who think they are immortal in an effort to get them started towards planning & saving early. Not like I am, struggling to put together a retirement and savings plan at a late age.

The Real World of Sherlock Holmes: The True Crimes Investigated by Arthur Conan Doyle
Published in Hardcover by Carroll & Graf (November, 1991)
Author: Peter Costello
Average review score:

Holmes Creator Turns Amateur Sleuth
As well as the creator of legendary sleuth Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was also something of an amateur detective himself. This book explores the many cases he involved himself with, although in most of them his part is minimal. However, he did help with some memorable investigations - Jack the Ripper, Dr Crippen and the disappearance of Agatha Christie for starters.

Unlike Holmes, though, most of Doyle's observations proved inconclusive. As well as this, the authorities were sometimes loath to accept his findings, and the author, Peter Costello, implies that several innocents were executed for wont of incriminating evidence. Throughout Doyle's long career, though, his crusading nature and willingness to stand up for the truth are impressive attributes.

This book concerns itself with Doyle as Holmes creator only in passing. Here we see the author as an ever-inquisitive seeker of solutions to real-life crimes, a passion he later directed to the Victorian fad of Spiritualism. Indeed, there are some crimes he claimed to have solved through consultation with then-famous mediums. Costello wisely leaves judgement on this score up to the reader.

As an addendum to Doyle's more familiar literary achievements, this book serves it purpose well and provides many interesting insights into the Victorian and Edwardian crime scene.

Renaissance
Published in Paperback by Publishers Overstock Remainder ()
Author: George Holmes
Average review score:

A Beautifully Illustrated History of the Renaissance
I have very little knowledge of the Renaissance and the only reason I picked this book up in the first place was for the beautiful illustrations contained inside. I found the book easy to read and the author provided me with an understanding of this period in history and backed this up with a fine selection of paintings and other items from the masters of this period.

I would recommend this book to anyone who wants an easy to understand account of the Renaissance and how it affected peoples lives. The author takes his time to explain the period in laymans terms, it was well presented and well researched. It's worth it just for the illustrations alone!

Which sparks the education vs. sports debate. with slade and celina one either side. But slades got a secret that he never wants celina to find out. This book was very good!

The Rivals of Sherlock Holmes: Early Detective Stories
Published in Paperback by Viking Press (February, 1972)
Author: Hugh, Sir, Comp. Greene
Average review score:

Not all rivals created equal.
This book is a compilation of detective stories published during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. While Hugh Greene, the editor of this book, refers to the detectives featured in this group of Victorian and Edwardian stories as rivals of Sherlock Holmes, not all rate as such. While Dr. Thorndyke, Martin Hewitt, and to a lesser extent the Old man in the Corner are worthy of comparision to the legendary sleuth of Baker Street, others such as Romney Pringle and Dorrington are decidedly inferior. Although not all coming to a standard demanded by the title, none of the detectives in this volume deserve oblivion. In editing this book, Hugh Greene has helped prevent these detectives from slipping into the London fogs forever.
